Saree Styling Tips for Skinny Women

A slim and well-toned figure is a goal for every woman across the globe. However, an excess of thinness can spark feelings of inferiority in women. Well, no one is perfect and each one of us always has something to work upon. But the fact is that certain silhouettes look better over a slim body, for example, a bandage dress, while some outfits are better suited for curvy or plump women.

In India, being skinny or having a body devoid of proper curves works as a thumbs-down factor when it comes to wearing saris. The Indian saree is an elaborate piece of garment which gracefully highlights the curves of a woman and therefore goes better with voluptuous figures while making thin ladies look extra lean. But with careful styling, even skinny women can make a mark in an elaborate drape. All you need to do is, follow these guidelines, which, will not only enhance your saree look but also boost your confidence tremendously.

1. Choose heavy borders

Ladies who are thin and tall can wear plain sarees edged with embroidered or lace borders. Choose fabrics like silk, velvet and cotton as these tend to add volume. While your plain drape will accentuate the beauty of your height, a heavy border will make you look broader thus giving you an appealingly proportionate look.

2. Opt for Bold Prints

A striking pattern can take partially away attention from your skinny figure. A bold floral printed saree or a captivating abstract printed drape styled with statement jewellery can work wonders on your overall wardrobe. Remember, styling is all about smartly concealing your shortcomings!

3. Experiment with horizontal stripes

Horizontal stripes give an illusion of broadness. Don a beige saree having brown panels for a softer appeal or a multicolor striped drape for a bolder look. While a black saree inherently has a slimming effect, choose a black drape with silver or grey bands to mystify your audience at an evening party.  Stripes and panels are indeed a great detail to play around with, but make sure that they are not limited to your pallu and are present even on the pleats!

4. Pick a lehenga flare

A regular saree falls almost straight over a fitted petticoat on the lower body while a lehenga saree has a wider and voluminous flare which is usually embellished and heavy. If you have a thin lower half, a lehenga saree is the best variant for you!

5. The right blouse

These days, saree blouses have moved beyond back tie-ups and embroidered necklines. Add ruffles and flared sleeve details to your saree blouse and see how it instantly makes you look better! You can even try balloon sleeves and cold shoulder necklines as these styles tend to enhance any type of figure.

The Indian saree is the most versatile piece of garment and can be beautifully carried by all women. All you need is proper selection of colours and garment details, careful styling and loads of confidence!

Kalamkari – The imitable fabric art of pen drawing

Kalamkari, literally translated to Pen Craft, is an age old way of fabric decoration. Persian in its origin, this gorgeous craft was made by hand painting, using the eponymous qalam – or using blocks. Today, it is largely made by block printing or screen printing. Many traditional Kalamkari designs are also recreated by digital printing – but this lacks the charm of the original art. Kalamkari has been practiced largely in Southern India, and its two main styles have developed there only. They are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam style.
